WHAT IS A GROUP HOME?

Let us begin by first stating what it is not.

A group home is not institutionalized care.

Institutionalized care is provided in places that are normally run by government bodies, as well as by non-government organizations. These places cater for a large number of residents with a generally one-size-fits-all approach, more likely irrespective of the individual who also does not have any choice on the people whom they have to live with. It may be a temporary arrangement or a lifelong stay for him or her, depending on his or her health, family, and other circumstances.

On the other hand, a group home is where a small group of friends with some type of  disabilities live together. Anywhere between 2 to 6 persons is a good number.

It is a permanent residential place for them.

It is their sanctuary.

It is their personal space.

It is their home.

It is where they belong.

With that in mind, a group home must provide all the necessities of life within a healthy environment that encourages the intellectual, emotional, social, and physical development and well being of each of its residents.

After-all life is about living, not just existing 💗

A group home setting must provide opportunities for life to be meaningful and productive, to be enjoyable and engaging, to be comfortable and secure, and to be stable with support.

A group home can be a fully independent one (👈 click the link)

OR

it can be one (👈 click the link) with a house manager to provide supervision, guidance, and support.

Our Beloved Home (Sabah) is set up with the second model in mind.

The house manager takes on the multi-roles of caregiver, teacher, and friend while supervising the residents’ day to day living which includes self-care, household chores, economic activities, community access, grocery shopping, meal preparations, leisure activities, physical exercises, and so on.

Once OBH (S) is up and running, we will be posting "A Day in the Life of the Residents" for an inside view for our supporters and subscribers.
